Big plans

This is the second consecutive week without work from Protocol and it dosen’t sound like I’ll be called into the office anytime soon. I’m too stressed out to write so instead I’ll be:

  • Getting my own webserver.
Having one career isn’t very secure. It would be nice to be able to apply to all those sysadmin jobs that can’t be outsourced to India, and both so-then.org and my writer page have had problems with their databases and reliability, so I’m going to do it myself. Right now I’m looking at a $500 server, Hopefully it’ll be up sometime this week. After I get my sites moved over to the server I’d be willing to host sites for you people too.
  • Thinking about grad school again. I’ve been reluctant to throw more time and money down the hole of education but this bachelor’s degree thing isn’t happening either.
I’ll probably go for a masters in Computer Science. I was looking at Cryptography and Security, but my background lends itself to Artificial Intelligence. Today I’ve been looking for faculty at UCSD who are working with Swarm Intelligence.
  • And I might be volunteering for the San Diego Asian Film Foundation. Not being asian myself I believe they’ll enslave me, force me to build a railroad and then execute me in retaliation.
    Good stuff.

In other news; Anatomically Incorrect & Ethically Challenged is being modified for publication in pacific REVIEW! (just some font changes, I’m not being censored) At least the comic book writing thing is coming along…

Teddy Revolution

So it seems that treats teddy bears like puppets…

Live it up while you can, Laurel, ’cause when the revolution comes guess what?

Yeah, I’m really bored…

A little too close to success.

I was about to sign a lease on a beautiful one bedroom on Alabama St with hardwood floors, nice layout and plenty of cabinet space.
And then my boss told me that there wasn’t going to be much work for me for the rest of the year. Hopefully I can count on averaging twenty hours a week until January.
He also told me that I probably shouldn’t sign a lease right now, and it might be a good time to start looking for another job.
Great.
What I could use right now is a back-up job that I can call up anytime I’m not needed at Protocol.

As funky as Pat Boone.

In between dodging hurricanes Chris Rieder has joined a band, timewellspent (Spelled with a lowercase ‘t’. Not because it’s arty, but because they haven’t learned the SHFT+T chord yet.)

Here’s a capsule review from this month’s Punk Planet:

As precious goes, these songs couldn’t get any more so. They’re like little porcelain candy dishes with kittens painted on them. Try as you might- were you the toughest person on the planet- you could not hate these songs. They do Belle and Sebastian-type of things, but softer.

Chris’ last gig was as music director for the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus so he’s rocking harder than usual.

Poor Players update

Maesure for Measure is an odd play. It’s called one of Shakespeare’s “problem plays” because “the resolution of the themes and debates seems inadequate, and in the final act the deliverance of justice and completion one expects does not occur.” I really liked this kind of “uncertain ending” and I’ll have to keep an eye out for his other problem plays.

Also in attendance was the lovely and talented , who knew both the play and many members of the production, was able to comment on the techniques used by the Poor Players in this production.

But the audience was only half full. I think I’m going to have to drag some people along for another show next weekend.

Earlier that day I saw two guys with trash bags full of bottles and cans from an apartment dumpster climb into their Jaguar and drive off.
Go fig.

Seven and a half hours under the needle.

It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. The first six hours didn’t hurt, the pain on the coloring wasn’t as intense as the line work was. The real challenge was in sitting backwards in a chair for all that time.

But for the last hour and a half Bill highlighted the tattoo with white, that ment coloring areas that had already been inflamed by the needle. Very painful.

I had a stack of magazines and just kept flipping the pages to have something to keep my mind off the pain and the boredom.

Bill asked me to go up to LA for the Inkslingers Ball to enter the contest for Best Black & Grey.

Sure, why not?

No picture yet. It’s still to red and raw. I should have one by Sunday.

My first published work.

I used to subscribe to the Ask Dr Science mailing list. Every week Dr Science would give a satirical answer to a readers question about science, he’d also list a question that was funny by itself.

The question I submitted in 1999 is in the Ask Dr Science Hall of Fame

chrisrieder2001 (11:41:54 AM): i’m gonna blog the hurricane
tone1971 (11:43:22 AM): By “blog the hurricane” do you mean you’re going to take the “What kind of Hurricane are you” Livejournal test?
chrisrieder2001 (11:44:21 AM): yes. “YOU ARE HURRICANE CHARLEY. YOU CAUSE UNTOLD BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGE AND KILL 27 PEOPLE!!!11!!uno!111!!
tone1971 (11:44:39 AM): heh
chrisrieder2001 (11:44:50 AM): nah, i’m just going to write about the storm and post pics for as long as the phone lines hold out
tone1971 (11:45:58 AM): rock on! You’re like the 21st century version of the old man who won’t abandon his home even though the forest fire is coming
chrisrieder2001 (11:46:38 AM): yes. i have iron balls. hopefully their mass will serve as ballast so i don’t get blown away.

It would be sad if Chris were to be killed by Hurricane Frances. But if his last words to me were, “yes. i have iron balls. hopefully their mass will serve as ballast so i don’t get blown away.” …that wouldn’t surprise me at all.
