Bathed in Light

The light of twenty candles would have been a romantic thing, but not these candles. Eight inches tall, sheathed in glass, a variety of colors, each with a picture of Jesus stuck to the front.

Jesus in the manger, Jesus on the mound, Jesus healing the sick, many of them picturing Jesus on the cross, and Sal’s prize; the blue one with Jesus hovering over a low-rider, bathing it with his healing light.

“What do you think?”, Sal asked expectantly.

“It’s, kinda creepy, Sal”, she said, “It’s like God is watching us.”

“I know. That’s what makes it so exciting!”

Morning Call from Mom

Mom: Tony! I need a favor from you.

Tone: What’s that?

Mom: Your father’s sister and her son are coming into San Diego in August. I need you to pick them up from the airport.

Tone: Sure, no problem.

Mom: You should probably have a sign with you that says “Milazzo” since she’s only seen you once.

Tone: Why don’t I hold a sign that says “Wops”?

Mom: No!

Tone: “Dagos”?

Mom: No!

Tone: “Ginnies”?

Mom: Tony! That’s horrible and rude and you’re half-wop yourself. If Sam heard you he’d be turning over in… well the ocean I guess.

First Full Day of Con

And some how I’m another $200 down. I’m not sure where this money went. Now I have to ask myself if I should complete my runs of Y: The Last Man and Rex Mundi. I’ll decide tomorrow morning. Fortunately, I’ll be spending a lot of tomorrow in panels, that’ll keep me out of the dealers room.

I ran down Spike at the Modern Tales booth. She’s become a quadruple threat. Not only can she write, draw and is one of the coolest people I’ve ever met, but now she’s been working out and I’m pretty sure she could kick my ass. I am, however, still taller than her and nothing will ever change that.

In other news; word on the street is that the clusterstruck flyers have been flying off the freebie table. I’m going to bring another ~1200 with me tomorrow. I hope I can get rid of all of them by Con’s end.

My goal for the 2003 Con was to have the Seize Him! script written and find an artist for the project. I did that.

My goal for the 2004 Can was to qualify as a professional with a completed work to prove it (Anatomically Incorrect and Ethically Challenged). I did that too.

I neglected to set a goal for this years Con so all I have is the clusterstruck flyers. That’s a step backwards. That’s not good enough.

New goal: have both the script and the novel versions of The Boy Trilogy[working title] done and published by by the 2006 Con. I want to have my own booth with a real product on the table.

I have some catching up to do.

The first two hours of Comic Con and the first $200 from my wallet.

I’m doing pretty good. I’ve got everything I set out to get; The Filth and completed my runs of Powers and Animal Man. And I still have $400 left in my budget.
However my four color erection has not subsided and will likely stay engorged until Sunday.

Infinite Crisis’ (Crisises? Crisis’s?)

Let’s talk about Infinite Crisis.

Now I’m as big a fan of Crisis on Infinite Earths as is allowed in a post-Crisis universe. I have the $99 hard cover, the 6 foot long, Ross-Pérez poster and I make the “Are you talking about the pre-Crisis [any character from any piece of fiction]?” Joke at least twice a month. But I agree that it’s time to go back to a multiverse.

The post-Crisis retcons did a really good job of bringing in the Fawcett, Charlton and other licensed characters DC had acquired over the years into the same light as their original line of stars. But from day one the editorial staff wasn’t up to the task of forming a seamless, integrated continuity (>cough!< >cough!< >Hawkworld!< >cough!<). Hence, Zero Hour, which still didn’t do the job.

Continuity is tough. Even for a single writer. For example, at one point Robinson Crusoe strips naked, leaves his clothes behind, swims to a neighboring island and then fills this pockets with rocks. Don’t believe me? Go read for yourself (I know you won’t).

IMHO continuity in a massive shared universe is impossible. So screw it, don’t bother. What’s really important is that one author’s run on one title is consistent within itself without worrying too much about what’s going on in the other titles. This is called “super consistency”, the reader treats ever title as a separate universe.

Thinking like this helps one relax and not get worked up over what happens in a comic book: Like when The Mist killed the entire JLE in the pages of Starman and none of the “heroes” in the JLA seemed to notice.

OK, that still bugs me, but I don’t get worked up over it any more.

The universe was an illusion anyway. John Byrne brought back a multiverse within two years after Crisis when he introduced a new General Zod.

DC tried, ham-handedly, to bring back the multiverse with Hypertime. But if you’re going to undo an event like the Crisis, you need an event as big as the Crisis. And from what I’ve been reading, and liking, in the limited series’ that are fore-shadowing Infinite Crisis, it’s gonna be really big.

And a multiverse will allow writers a lot more creative freedom, beyond Elseworlds. I think we’re going to see that with the All-Star line; Miller’s Batman and Morrison’s Superman.

Where does this leave the editors?… Well they had a good run.

I deleted the consolidated clusterstore and broke it up into a collection of free shops.
And then I added rotating links to the shops on clusterstruck
That’ll save me $7 a week.

After last night’s party-

We have more hard liquor than when we started.
We broke even on beer.
Took a loss on food.
Way more wine.
And way, way more chips.

Looks like we’ll have to do this again soon.
