Native San Diegan and former U.S. Marine Tone Milazzo’s darkly fascinating first book, Picking Up the Ghost, was recently published by the eclectic Canadian house ChiZine Publications. Milazzo will host a book-release party at Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore, where new fans may purchase the novel at the signing.

Picking Up the Ghost centers on Cinque Williams, a 14-year-old African-American boy living in St. Jude, Illinois, a dying city on the bank of the Mississippi. When a letter informs him of the passing of the father he never met, Cinque is faced with an incomplete past and an uncertain future. A Voodoo curse meant for his father condemns Cinque to a slow death even as it opens his eyes to the strange, magic world around him. With help from the ghost Willy T, an enigmatic white woman named Iku, an African Loa, and a devious shape-shifter, Cinque learns that sometimes too much knowledge can be dangerous – and the people he trusts most are those poised to betray him.

After too many late nights writing while working full time during the day, local author Tone Milazzo left the high-tech world of software development to pursue his literary goals. Fans of dark fantasy will be glad he did.
